Ari Vatanen

Definition and Historical Standing
Born in 1952 in Tuupovaara, Finland, Ari Pieti Uolevi Vatanen is the 1981 World Rally Championship (WRC) Drivers' Champion and only the second Finnish driver in history to claim the WRC world title. Spanning the WRC, the Dakar Rally, and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, his illustrious career marks him as one of the most versatile Finnish drivers in motorsport history. Renowned for his intensely aggressive and spectacular driving style, Vatanen once famously quipped: "Do as I say, don't do as I do."

Early Career and First WRC Title
Vatanen made his WRC debut at the 1974 1000 Lakes Rally in Finland. In 1976, he clinched the British Rally Championship crown before becoming a regular WRC privateer entrant in 1977 behind the wheel of a Ford Escort RS1800. In 1979, he signed with the Rothmans Ford squad, partnering co-driver David Richards (now Chairman of Motorsport UK). Vatanen claimed his maiden WRC event win at the 1980 Acropolis Rally in Greece. In 1981, driving a Ford Escort RS1800, he fended off fierce factory team competition to seal the World Championship with three victories (Acropolis, Brazil, and 1000 Lakes), becoming the second Finnish WRC champion after Björn Waldegård in 1979.

Peugeot 205 T16 and the Group B Peak
Following his championship victory, Vatanen took on selective outings before joining Peugeot as the legendary Group B era dawned. Piloting the iconic 205 T16 rally machine, he racked up five consecutive victories between the 1984 1000 Lakes Rally and the 1985 Swedish Rally, demonstrating consummate mastery over the four-wheel-drive monster. During the 1985 season, whilst leading the championship standings, Vatanen suffered a horrific, near-fatal crash at Rally Argentina, abruptly cutting his season short and leaving the title to his teammate Timo Salonen. The accident proved to be a major watershed in his motorsport career.

Four Dakar Titles and Pikes Peak Legend
Upon his recovery, Vatanen shifted focus to cross-country rallying. In 1987, he claimed overall victory in the car category on his Paris-Dakar Rally debut, becoming the first Finnish driver to win the gruelling event. He followed up with a hat-trick of consecutive victories in 1989, 1990, and 1991, tallying four Dakar titles to rank second on the all-time winners list. In 1988, he steered a Peugeot 405 T16 to a record-shattering victory at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb—a performance widely regarded by the man himself as one of his most iconic drives. Remarkably, during the 1988 Dakar Rally, Vatanen's car was stolen while he was leading; otherwise, a five-in-a-row winning streak would have been well within reach.

Political Career and Public Roles
Beyond motorsport, Vatanen ventured into the political arena. In 1999, he was elected as a Member of the European Parliament representing Finland's conservative National Coalition Party, successfully winning re-election in 2004 before completing his tenure in 2009. In 2009, he ran for the presidency of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), conceding to Jean Todt. In 2013, he made history as the first foreigner elected President of the Estonian Autosport Union. Renowned for his candid and outspoken demeanour in public affairs, Vatanen has openly critiqued Finnish leadership on defence and security policies.

Later Years and Legacy
Vatanen formally hung up his rally boots in 2007, yet remains an active figure in the motorsport paddock as a mentor to up-and-coming talent and an expert commentator. In 2026, the 74-year-old veteran publicly lauded Finnish young gun Sami Pajari, remarking that Pajari's "driving approach is far more sensible than mine ever was", whilst congratulating him on securing Finland's milestone 200th WRC victory. Vatanen and his wife Rita are based in Provence, France, where they operate a lavender and olive oil farm, while maintaining their family roots in Tuupovaara, Finland. In 2019, Vatanen was officially inducted into the FIA Hall of Fame as the 1981 World Champion. Defined by "speed, sheer courage, and versatility", his remarkable journey from WRC champion to four-time Dakar winner and statesman remains an unmatched legacy in Finnish motorsport history.
